Additional Info About Our Church
West Paris Baptist Church was organized on July 7, 1829. The members wanted a Free Will Baptist Church closer to home. They were members of a Baptist Church in Sumner. The 15 mile trip was difficult, especially in Maine winters. The Church building was built in 1866 and was dedicated in 1867. A basement with fellowship hall, kitchen and bathroom, was added in the 1960s. An addition with two Sunday School rooms was built in the 1980s. A Sunday School room and office were built in the basement in 2008. Numerous improvements and remodeling projects have been done over the years, such as an office for the Pastor, the addition of a second bathroom, a lift chair for handicapped persons, and cushions on the pews. The coming of the railroad shifted the center of commerce from North Paris to West Paris in the 1800s and promoted modest prosperity as several mills located in West Paris and mines opened in the area. Closing of the mines and mills in the mid and late 1900s led to relative poverty, with few jobs available in town. Most people who have jobs commute to South Paris, Auburn/Lewiston or Portland.
