Additional Info About Our Church
The roots of this congregation go deep into the history of Long Island. In 1950 newbies to this new post World War II suburbia concept introduced by Levittown decided to meet together to form the Lutheran Congregation. Mr. Levitt approved and gave this group of Northern Europeans two acres of land in what was once potato fields. With enthusiasm land was broken and it was "away to the races" an appropriate expression here on Hempstead Turnpike where some of the worlds first automobile races were held. The years unfolded with demographic changes and now this church boasts members reflecting the current demographics of Long Island. The diversity is growing as our unity increase sin the powerful sense that we are all called here by God to be His people; making a huge difference in the lives of each other and Long Island. It's a great place to attend as testified by numerous long term members as well as a HUGE number of new members over the past few years and longish tenures of our permanent called Pastors. In the last 40 years, Good Shepherd has had tow ministers serve them; Pastor John Harmon and Pastor Remo Madsen with an Interim Pastor filling in for 18 months before Pastor Remo was called.
