Additional Info About Our Church
The church opened in 1870 on Park Avenue in Bolton Hill, near downtown Baltimore. The building itself was the gift of Mrs. Isabella Brown, in memory of her late husband, Mr. George Brown. Mr. Brown was the son of Alex Brown, founder of the historic investment firm in Baltimore.
The congregation has enjoyed a succession of notable pastors. One moved from here to become president of Princeton Theological Seminary; one served as moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church; one became the head of the Home Mission Department for the denomination; two moved from here to prominent pulpits in New York City and Chicago; and one was among the organizers of the civil rights demonstrations in the early 1960s that integrated Gwynn Oaks Park in Baltimore.
In 1960 the church opened a second campus on North Charles Street, and became "one church in two locations." For the next twenty years, the pastor led an early service at the Woodbrook campus, then rushed downtown to lead worship on Park Avenue. In 1980 the congregation decided to separate and become two distinct congregations: Brown Memorial Woodbrook Presbyterian Church, and Brown Memorial Park Avenue Presbyterian Church.
Brown Memorial Woodbrook is part of the Presbytery of Baltimore of the Presbyterian Church USA.
Mission:
Compassion: Our Church believes that the committed life centers in compassion shown to all of God's children in our local community and in the whole of the world.
Learning: Our Church believes that all Christians need to develop new ways of understanding how our faith intersects with our own life stories and with the stories of others through interaction with the Scriptures, with each other and with interpreters of the world around us.
Inclusion: Our Church believes that all of us grow as we connect with the people in the world around us and with the world at a distance. We embrace diversity in membership, culture and religious tradition.
Faith: Our Church believes that the core of why we meet is centered in the faith we proclaim. That faith has historic roots in the creeds and confessions of the Reformed churches. Our history is forever in conversation with our brothers and sisters around us, inside and outside of faith.
Vision:
Vision 2016: In five years God will see us welcoming all God's children; sharing Christ's love with others; intentionally and actively building our faith to understand God's purpose for us; using our physical resources sustainably to honor God; and, celebrating God's love with abandon.
Purpose:
We commit to living out God's love through: Compassion; Learning; Inclusion; Faith
